Gulo Abang (Sugar of Java), The Home Industry in Kepel - Lojejer Village


Have you once known Red Sugar before? i am so sure that the most of people in Indonesia know this sugar. The composition of this sugar comes from Nira. Nira is liquid that derives from young flower of coconut which is not blossom yet. The nira it self is collected by people in some containers and then it is processed become Red Sugar.


In the Kepel-Lojejer, Wuluhan, Jember- Indonesia, Red Sugar is one of the income source for a half people. It becomes the Home Industry to fulfill their necessary necessity. The process of red sugar is needed a lot of time before it is consumed.



The nira, which is collected in some containers, is placed in two big pans. In the first big pan is to cook nira. Cooking nira is needed much of time. It is about six-seven hours before it is move to second big pan. In the first pan, the nira is intentionally cooked until the water in that lacks. Keeping fire in order to not dead is so important because by big fire, cooking nira will be more good. So, people always effort to keep it flame. After in the first big pan have done, the nira is ready to move in the second big pan. In the second big pan, the nira is stirring until fully cooked.

After the nira is ready then nira is formed in the bamboo or in the place of Dakon (it is tools of traditional games). Usage of Dakon is more popular to people of Kepel-Lojejer in 2000's until now. The Red Sugar is sold about IDR 15.000 per 1 Kg.
